In this high-tech world we live in everyone needs a little low-tech tender loving care.
A very short history lesson
Reflexology can be traced as far back as 2500 BC. Pictographs of what is believed to be an early form of the discipline were found on the walls of the tomb of Ankhmahor who was an Egyptian physician to the Pharaoh. At the same time Reflexology was also found to be practiced in India, China and Japan. "Footwork" as it is know, has been practiced by Native Americans since the time of the Incas. They believe that the earth is the source of energy and that people are connected to this energy through their feet.
What is Reflexology?
It is the application of pressure through specific techniques with the thumbs and fingers to your feet, hands and ears that creates a state of relaxation which can reduce stress in your body. Over time, this stress reduction can cause positive physiological changes in your body. Your body is a finely tuned machine. It does its job of living without you even realizing it. Imagine if you had to think about digesting your dinner or breathing in and out or making your heart beat 87,000 times a day. What we do, how we live, even how we think about things, effects how our body responds to the daily stresses of life. Through the application of pressure these flows can be lessened or increased as needed, thus causing physiological changes in the body. It can also improve circulation, which will bring more oxygen and nutrients to the cells of the body thus encouraging the natural healing process. All this and the only things you have to take off are your shoes and socks.
How does Reflexology work?
There are quite a few theories about this subject. You have hundreds of thousands of nerve endings in you feet and hands, more than any place else in your body. When these nerve endings are stimulated through touch pressure they send messages to your brain, which in turn releases neurochemicals such as endorphins that will relax you. In this relaxed state your body will begin to return to its naturally serene state. Remember: your feet are the foundation that supports your entire body, if the foundation is weak or in pain, the whole structure suffers. Keep in mind Reflexology should never be considered as a substitute for medical treatment. If you are ill you should see your doctor.
Stress and your body
Stress is our body's enemy. On a daily basis, we can get so used to the everyday stresses of life we don't even realize what they are doing to us. It slowly saps our strength and energy. Stress causes our adrenal glands to produce hormones like adrenaline that keep us in a constant state of heightened awareness. During times of duress the body can't do its housekeeping jobs adequately, such as proper digestion or tissue repair. Over time its possible to weaken the immune system, which in turn leaves us open to diseases and infections. Some examples of the body's response to stress could be headaches, muscle tension in the shoulders, a sensation of a "knot in the pit of your stomach", even sore feet or a sore back. Reflexology can help you bring down the stress related hormones, relax you and ease tensions so your autonomic nervous system can work properly.
